Horse-drawn carriages are part of the spectacle at The Maestranza bullring in the capital of Andalucia, a southern region also known for flamenco dancing and Moorish architecture.
Spanish matador Jose Antonio Ruiz "Espartaco" drives a sword into a bull. Bulls are bred especially to fight. Only those with the right level of aggression as yearlings are chosen for further tests of their mettle. The bravest of the bulls make it to the ring, while the most skilful matadors - seen by their fans as showmen, athletes and keepers of tradition - earn riches, fame and adulation. Spanish matador Juan Jose Padilla makes a sign of the cross with his foot before the start of a bullfight.
Spanish Matador gored to death in bullfight is first to be killed in more than 30 years
