The faster you go, the heavier things become and the more your rocket will resist your efforts to make it go faster. Einstein showed that nothing that has a mass can ever reach the speed of light.

What is Relativity and Why Should We Care?

Because the speed of light is such a big number, even a tiny amount of mass is equivalent to — and can be converted into — a very large amount of energy. The basic idea is that instead of being an invisible force that attracts objects to one another, gravity is a curving or warping of space. The more massive an object, the more it warps the space around it.

For example, the sun is massive enough to warp space across our solar system — a bit like the way a heavy ball resting on a rubber sheet warps the sheet. As a result, Earth and the other planets move in curved paths orbits around it.

This warping also affects measurements of time. We tend to think of time as ticking away at a steady rate.

But just as gravity can stretch or warp space, it can also dilate time. The existence of time implies eternity as time has a beginning and an end , and the existence of space implies infinity.

Special Relativity Principles

The very concepts of infinity and eternity infer a Creator because they find their very state of being in God, who transcends both and simply is. Theory Of Relativity Theory of Relativity — A Brief History The Theory of Relativity, proposed by the Jewish physicist Albert Einstein in the early part of the 20th century, is one of the most significant scientific advances of our time.

It was once thought that there existed a light-carrying medium, known as the luminiferous ether , which was in a state of absolute rest. Any object in motion with respect to this hypothetical frame of reference would be in absolute motion.

    Relativity in Motion

The theory of relativity showed, however, that no such medium was necessary and that all motion could be treated as relative. The Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia, 6th ed. All rights reserved.
